Camera, Eyes
2022 Research & Studies

0. Brief
AR/MR technology is used by humans who make dynamic movements. In other words, the laws of vision that humans see in the real world are the same as those in the digital world. The eyes of the real world are replaced by cameras in the digital world. In the project, I studied the laws of vision in the real world and for camera lenses and explained these laws in visual media through experiments.

1. Experiment 1 _ Law of vision
Through research, a total of four types of visual laws of the human eye [Perspective, Depth, Memory & Experience, and Viewpoint] were found. Then, I made basic figures with color papers for the experiment. The largest figure is about 30 cm (11.8 in) tall and there are several shapes, depths, and sizes of figures for experiment purposes. And I conducted an experiment on four visual laws using these shapes.

Memory & Experience
A car object was used. We know that cars have both dynamic and static movements. That's why I included perspectives from two cameras: The Target moves to the camera and the camera moves to the target.

Depth
I captured the camera's gaze while approaching a figure with more depth.

View point
Two figures were used: a medium-sized square shape and a long large vertical shape. Both figures show the camera's gaze approaching from the bottom to the top point, the middle point, and from the top to the bottom point.

Perspective
Changes in size and perspective occur simultaneously. That's why I captured the view of the camera approaching a small figure, a medium-sized figure, and a large figure with a vertically extended length.

2. Experiment 2 _ Angle of view
In previous experiments, I tested the visual laws of the human eyes. In this experiment, I conducted an experiment on a camera that plays the role of an eye in the digital world. As a pre-research on camera lenses, I looked into three angles of view.

Then, I carried out an experiment with these three angles of view using moving cameras in a complicated layout of figures. The complexity and various sizes and shapes of figures are intended for cameras to capture different perspectives while passing these figures.

This is an experiment video of cameras passing amongst figures with three angles of view. It was taken with a Wide lens (0.5x), Normal lens (1x), and Telephoto lens (2x), and each of these three lenses showed clearly different perspectives. The lens that was closest to human vision was the Normal lens (1x), as I had already found during research.

3. Experiment 3
In the previous experiment, I experimented with the real human visual law and the angle of view of the camera lens. In this experiment, I conducted an experiment that incorporated these two. First, I researched to identify the shot types for video works that vary according to angle of view.

Based on the research, I created a test subject that can clarify the learnings of the research; I used black paper to create a square box with a hole in the front. Within that square, I placed a small yellow square box and took pictures according to the eight-shot types I researched about.

4. Design
The experiment was incorporated into a design work afterward. To do so, videos on which I can incorporate these learnings and research topics were considered. These were two short music videos that had stories in them. Once videos were chosen, I recorded the angle of view and viewpoints used every second the scene of the videos changed.

Finally, I produced outputs that combine the angle of view, viewpoints, and colors of each scene. From the output, I could tell that every scene had different angles of view, viewpoints, and colors.
